Travelling Gavel returns to Brett Valley once again

On 5th October fourteen Brett Valley members made the long and arduous journey from Hadleigh to Priory Lodge in Sudbury. They were warmly welcomed by the new WM Steven Ray in the temple and settled back to enjoy the initiation of Mr Richard Brand. An excellent ceremony unfolded, in particular Bro. Stephen Martin-Halls the Junior Deacon doing a wonderful job in firstly guiding the candidate around the temple and then presenting the working tools. On restoring himself to his personal comforts Bro Brand received the Charge from W.Bro. Andrew Robson in a really nice, warm manner.

A good festive board followed and the Priory WM finally read out the rules of the Travelling Gavel and invited any present to make their claim. A barely audible ripple of noise appeared to come from a small number of Stour Valley members present, however the cunning and very confident WM of Brett Valley, Tim Warner, bided his time and staked his claim to the Gavel with seconds to spare.

The Brett Valley members, looking forward with expectant anticipation to the forfeit were led on to the stage and stood behind closed curtains whilst the DC Andy Gentle dressed them in a bizarre variety of wigs, masks and other items designed to cause distress. Brief instructions were issued and as 80s pop icons Abba’s hit tune ‘Gimme, Gimme, Gimme A Man After Midnight’ played in the background so the Brett Valley members ‘danced’ on the stage, all singing the chorus at the top of their voices.

A great forfeit, a great night, new friendships made and the Travelling Gavel made its way back to Hadleigh once again.

The next meeting at Brett Valley in Hadleigh and is a second degree on Friday 27th November, meeting opens at 6pm, the Secretary W.Bro. Chris Wilson can be contacted  at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
